buried village

Transporting audiences into history with immersive VR storytelling.

DOTDOT produced, directed, and built The Buried Village of Te Wairoa VR experience, transporting visitors back to 1886. Audiences explore the remote wilderness of Aotearoa New Zealand, witnessing the Pink and White Terraces—known as the eighth wonder of the world—just before Mount Tarawera’s catastrophic eruption that buried the terraces and the surrounding village.

the experience begins around a campfire, where a Māori storyteller sets the scene and conjures a time-traveling journey to the village as it once was. Visitors meet locals, join a trek to the terraces, and follow the lives of heroes and victims on that fateful night.

Premiered at SXSW Sydney and on view at the Te Wairoa Museum.
