HISTORICAL FIGURE JOE BEEF | Pointe-à-Callière museum

Pointe-à-Callière Museum sought to transform a historical figure into a living presence within its permanent exhibition.

Dpt. created an interactive embodiment of Joe Beef, the legendary 19th-century Montreal tavern keeper. Powered by a locally deployed conversational AI system grounded in curated archival research, the character engages visitors in open dialogue while maintaining historical accuracy and narrative control.

The installation shifts the audience from observer to participant. A static display becomes a responsive exchange. History becomes something you can question.

The project demonstrates how conversational characters can be designed for physical environments, extending storytelling beyond display into direct interaction.
